Janel Ortiz is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute under the direction of Dr. April Conkey and Dr. Leonard Brennan. She earned a Bachelor of Animal Science at the University of California, Davis and participated in internships in wildlife rehabilitation, zoo keeping, education and outreach, and behavioral research. Janel earned a Master of Science in Biology at California State University, Los Angeles where her research looked at behavioral differences in the native and invasive tree squirrels found in Southern California.
With the East Foundation, Janel will be monitoring and analyzing bird populations on three properties, El Sauz, San Antonio Viejo, and Santa Rosa, continuing from the work of graduate student Maia Lipschutz. Species will be documented during non-breeding and breeding bird surveys which Tom Langschied began in 2008. Upon completion of her doctorate at CKWRI, Janel looks forward to a career as a wildlife professor.
