Description: The mission of the East Foundation (EF) is to support wildlife conservation and other public benefits of ranching and private land stewardship. Our mission is achieved through research, education, and outreach.
The EF was founded in 2007 to promote wildlife conservation, livestock management, ranching heritage, and private land stewardship. The intent of the East family was that the Foundation support research, education, and outreach for sustaining rangeland habitats for both native wildlife conservation and livestock production. The Foundation owns more than 217,000 acres of native South Texas rangeland. Properties include the historic San Antonio Viejo Ranch near Hebbronville, and five additional properties occurring eastward to the Gulf Coast.
This position will focus on the collection of vegetation data on the East Foundation Ranches, mainly within an 18,000-acre experimental grazing study, during one of the two separate field seasons which are conducted in the summer and fall/winter. Data include: forage utilization, forage standing crop, and vegetation structure, cover, and composition. We use grazing exclosures, double sampling, and transects with quadrats to collect data. Technicians will also be responsible for entering all data into an electronic format and ensuring its quality and accuracy. Additionally, technicians will learn to use Vegetation GIS Data System software for data collection. Candidates with experience identifying South Texas plants and conducting vegetative measurements will be given preference.
Qualifications: Undergraduates and recent graduates in Wildlife/Ranch Management/Natural Resources/Animal Science or related degree programs are encouraged to apply. Ideal candidates will be honest, self-motivated persons with a strong work ethic and experience in identifying South Texas plants. Applicants should possess strong people skills, leadership qualities, and communication ability. These positions will require working long hours in adverse conditions. These positions will require lifting objects greater than 50 lbs. Successful candidates must maintain a valid driver license. Applicants are subjected to background checks. Applicants must be able to use computer software such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, in addition to basic computer skills.
Preferred Skills: Identification of Texas plants (grass, forbs, and shrubs) and experience with vegetation sampling methods. However, we are willing to train ideal candidates.
The start and end dates are flexible, and EF will assist successful applicants in any way to receive relevant university credit for term(s), if applicable.
