East Foundation Vegetation Technician Position(s)

Location:  Based at San Antonio Viejo Ranch (45 minutes south of Hebbronville, Texas); potentially working on all Foundation properties throughout South Texas

Salary:  $11 per hour plus housing

The East Foundation is a non-profit tax-exempt organization established in 2007 upon the passing of Robert C. East on June 18, 2007.  The Foundation operates six ranches across approximately 217,000 acres of south Texas native rangelands making it one of the largest private landowners in both Texas and the nation.  With administrative offices in San Antonio, the Foundation deploys a staff of over 40 throughout south Texas to meets its mission to promote the advancement of land stewardship through ranching, science, and education.  To fulfill its mission, the Foundation:

  • Uses its land as a working laboratory where scientists and managers work together to address issues important to wildlife, rangeland management and overall ranch productivity.
  • Through good land stewardship, ensures that ranching and wildlife management work together in order to conserve healthy rangelands.
  • Influences public policy by ensuring our government and universities have land stewards’ best interests in mind.
  • Builds future leaders through programs that introduce students to private land stewardship.
  • Invests in professional development for the next generation of land stewards through internships, graduate fellowships, and close engagements with university programs.

This position will focus on the collection of vegetation data on the East Foundation Ranches, mainly within an 18,000-acre experimental grazing study, during one of the two separate field seasons which are conducted in the summer and fall/winter.  Data include: forage utilization, forage standing crop, and vegetation structure, cover, and composition.  We use grazing exclosures, double sampling, and transects with quadrats to collect data. Technicians will also be responsible for entering all data into an electronic format and ensuring its quality and accuracy. Additionally, technicians will learn to use Vegetation GIS Data System software for data collection. Candidates with experience identifying South Texas plants and conducting vegetative measurements will be given preference.

Qualifications:  Undergraduates and recent graduates in Wildlife/Ranch Management/Natural Resources/Animal Science or related degree programs are encouraged to apply.  Ideal candidates will be honest, self-motivated persons with a strong work ethic and experience in identifying South Texas plants.  Applicants should possess strong people skills, leadership qualities, and communication ability.  These positions will require working long hours in adverse conditions.  These positions will require lifting objects greater than 50 lbs.  Successful candidates must maintain a valid driver license.  Applicants are subjected to background checks.  Applicants must be able to use computer software such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, in addition to basic computer skills.

Preferred Skills: Identification of Texas plants (grass, forbs, and shrubs) and experience with vegetation sampling methods. However, we are willing to train ideal candidates.
