Roel Lopez is originally from South Texas and from an early age appreciated wildlife and natural resources – as a child, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family.  As Director of the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute, Roel works with stakeholders to develop engaging, meaningful and strategic research and extension programs and policies that address current natural resource challenges in Texas and throughout the United States.  His research focuses on wildlife population ecology, natural resource management, sustainability of military lands, and rural land trends and demographics.  Roel is based out of NRI’s San Antonio office. 

Roel continues to hold the rank of a professor in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Stephen F. Austin State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from Texas A&M University.  He currently lives in San Antonio with his wife and two children.
