Increasing Livestock Production Value

We combine genetic selection, synchronized breeding, and performance tracking to produce cattle that excel in South Texas conditions and command premium market value. This demonstrates that sustainable ranching can be both environmentally and economically viable.

Our Approach

Success in livestock production comes from attention to detail, consistent implementation of best practices, and always keeping an eye on the future.

Increasing Production Efficiency

We optimize our operations through:

  • Strategic logistics planning and execution
  • Research-based nutrition programs
  • Careful resource allocation to control costs
  • Precise inventory tracking and management

Through Herd Improvement

Our breeding program focuses on developing cattle that are:

  • Uniform: Creating predictable outcomes and reducing variability
  • Adapted: Selecting for longevity and ability to thrive in our environment
  • Manageable: Emphasizing good temperament and ease of handling
  • Productive: Maintaining high reproductive rates and optimal weaning weights

Striving for Success

Improving Product Value

To enhance the value of our livestock products, we concentrate on producing high-quality cattle that meet or exceed market demands. This includes focusing on desirable traits, implementing value-added programs, and maintaining rigorous quality control throughout the production process.

  • Weaned calves
  • Raised yearlings
  • Fed cattle
  • Replacements/cow herd

Improving Our Herd Over the Years

We continuously evolve and adapt to meet tomorrow’s challenges.

How

We’ve built a better herd through intentional science, improved infrastructure, documentation of our data, assistance from valued partners and appreciated resources, and the desire to be better.

When

Our team started improving our herd in 2020 and has been working on improving it through science and research since then.

Why

We produce literature and shares resources with others. We strive to be competitive with the market demand for cattle and to increase the uniformity and productivity of our cattle.

The beginning

We began managing 217,000 acres of South Texas ranchland a decade ago. After inheriting a traditional management system characterized by large pastures, continuous grazing, and no synchronized breeding seasons, we have transformed these ranches into a living laboratory for sustainable land stewardship. Our ranching team has focused on demonstrating how well-managed native rangeland and cattle operations are crucial to both the economic and ecological future of South Texas.

Our Learnings & Challenges

We’ve faced a few major challenges in building a better cattle herd. There’s significant logistical complexity in maintaining contemporary breeding groups and moving herds between pastures while completely turning over the herd. In addition, sourcing genetics that can thrive in South Texas’s challenging environment while meeting market criteria is difficult, particularly when sourcing Red Angus bulls that typically originate from much further north.

Staying Alert

How We Identify Risk

We identify and mitigate risks across biological, economic, and environmental domains through continuous monitoring and adaptive strategies. From maintaining robust quarantine protocols and implementing market volatility safeguards to employing flexible stocking rates based on annual land evaluations, we strive to balance productivity with sustainability in the face of various challenges.

We actively identify and address key risks:

Weather Preparedness

  • Drought management strategies
  • Alternative feed planning
  • Water resource

Management Health Protection

  • Comprehensive vaccination programs
  • Disease prevention protocols
  • Regular health monitoring

Market Protection

  • Strategic marketing plans
  • Price risk management tools
  • Market timing optimization

Learn How Science Informs Our Decisions

We believe that effective ranch management results from precise measurement and analysis. By implementing the results from various research initiatives, we can make informed choices that optimize our ranching practices for long-term sustainability and productivity.
