Compatibility of Dual Enterprises for Cattle and Deer in North America: A Quantitative Review

Cattle grazing and deer populations often share North American habitats, with their compatibility determined primarily by geographic region, cattle stocking rates, and season. A comprehensive review of 85 publications found that cattle and deer remain compatible when cattle stocking rates stay below 0.12-0.17 AUY ha⁻¹, with minimal diet overlap during summer and autumn, though cattle have greater potential to negatively impact deer in forest-dominated ecosystems compared to open rangelands.
