From Drovers – “Report, Don’t Hide It”: Experts Urge Rapid Action When Suspecting New World Screwworm

As New World Screwworm edges closer to the U.S., our Chief Science Officer, Jason Sawyer, and other industry leaders are urging producers to shift from worry to action, emphasizing preparedness, early detection, and coordinated response planning with veterinarians. Sawyer participated in Merck Animal Health’s Breakthrough Symposium on NWS Preparedness, where panelists outlined key strategies, including tightening calving seasons, improving handling facilities, and maintaining disciplined “eyes on animals” surveillance. While the threat is serious, Sawyer notes that NWS has been eradicated from the U.S. before: “We know how to do it. We just have to sort of build the capacity and muscle to get it done again when we need to.”
